For the first time in a long time, getting into the Roseland Ballroom was easy. And I have Bon Jovi to thank, if you can believe that. You see, the NFL decided to kick off the 2002 season by having Bon Jovi throw a free concert in Times Square. There was going to be crowds that would rival New Years Eve, according to the press. Getting into the Roseland Ballroom with will call tickets is a nightmare to begin with, let alone with large crowds in the immediate area. The NFL spared no expense. They blocked traffic, they set up speakers on every corner from 42nd Street to 55th Street and they even set up Jumbotrons everywhere so that the people in the back could see what's going on.
In light of this "event," the will call booth opened very early. Local police took over as security and everybody got in quickly and easily. The evening had already started in a positive way and when Burning Brides hit the stage, they kept the positive flow going. It's very rare that an opener can command such a crowd, and they are certainly going to sell a few CD's during this tour.
Next up was a band called "And They Shall Know Us By The Trail of Dead." I realize that after 40 years of rock n roll, bands have run out of names and have to resort to using sentences, but let's keep it under five words. Keeping the spirit of the night alive, Trail of Dead showed how tight of a band they were by switching instruments every song and trading places every other song. It was difficult to determine who was really the singer, the lead guitar and drummer as they all played each other's instruments and took turns on vocals. One thing that was easy to determine, is that Trail of Dead, like the Burning Brides, have a career in front of them if they can keep producing the great music that they played. Next up was Queens of the Stone Age who rolled through three songs from their second album "R."
The light show produced some strobing effects and background showed images of telephone poles, cat's eyes, prayer hands and a noose. They managed to cram about fifteen songs inside of an hour. They used only three encore songs to fill up the other half hour by using long winded solos that really didn't go anywhere. Overall, if this bill is the future of rock n roll, then we can all relax and take our choice of nicotine, valium, vicodin, marajuana, ectasy or alcohol. |
