The New York subway system is a piece of shit. It took me an hour and 15 minutes to get to Irving Plaza, a trip that would normally take a half an hour. Had I known that the doors wouldn’t be open by 8:30 I wouldn’t have bothered hurrying. Had I known that opening act A Pygmy Love Circus was a joke of a band, I wouldn't have bothered getting there early. Had I known that A Perfect Circle would hit the stage around 10:30, I would have gotten drunk somewhere. And had I known that it would have taken me another hour to get home, I would have just said fuck this whole thing. But I’m glad I didn’t. The silver lining to my ordeal came in the guise of APC’s tight set.

The lights mostly drowned the band out, so you couldn’t really see any faces unless you were directly in front. For the opening number, Keenan remained silhouetted behind a curtain. He stood on a riser above the band with the lights washing away his features, except for the pigtails in his hair. Not much talking as one song went into another. Only a poor joke about a duck and Keenan teasing White about flirting with someone in the audience was the most that was said during the show.

I believe the sound was actually lower than that of the openers. After seeing Tool, I believe that Keenan wants the audience to concentrate on the music and visuals rather than on the band, so even in a tiny theatre, the show can come across like a big event. When this show moves on to bigger venues, I can only imagine what’s in store.
