July 31, 2004
A hot and humid day turned into a breezy night by the time The Cure hit the stage. After the crowd was thoroughly warmed up by acts like Muse and Interpol, Randall’s Island was ready for the real thing. The Cure played a set of their most popular songs with a few new songs thrown in the mix. It was nice not to hear any band go “Let me hear you out there,” as the vibe was really laid back.

Curiosa re-introduced Interpol to New York where anticipation for their new album is very high. The other New York band, The Rapture, had an uneven performance. The sound was very choppy during their set. I was unable to catch The Cooper Temple Clause, Auf Der Maur and Mogwai due to the schedule. I chose purposely not to see Thursday. The only second stage act I caught was Muse, whose energetic albeit too brief set justified my reason to catch them.

Plenty of tickets were still available as even The Cure isn’t above feeling the crunch of a dismal summer. Of course they, unlike Lollapalooza, proved that there is still an audience for alternative rock and even a not too strong bill can keep a tour going.
