The 8th Annual K-Rock Dysfunctional Family Picnic did not sell as well as the previous 7 incarnations. In fact, they reduced the prices to $31.25 in order to fill more seats. Perhaps the reasoning behind the poor ticket sales is that there really wasn't any rock bands performing. Or maybe it was because most of the bands were local only a couple of years ago.
Whatever the reason, those who chose not to attend missed out on some varied performances. From the Darkness' incessantly flamboyant frontman, Justin Hawkings, who couldn't keep still for their entire set, to the completely stoic Strokes who didn't move for the entirety of theirs. Solid sets by Cypress Hill and the Beastie Boys and a surprise appearance by Jay-Z made rap the highlight of the night.
The unneccesary second stage saw acts like Taking Back Sunday whose sound was uneven and Story of the Year who look a lot younger than when I previously saw them. New Found Glory's set would have been better had it not overlapped the set of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Still, the lineup could have had more punch to it. The idea of having The Strokes close the night may not have been a good one since a quarter of the half-filled audience left after the Beastie Boys. Oh well, perhaps there will be more rock at next years picnic.
