Interpol
With Special Guests
Cat Power & Dirty Delta Blues
The Liars

Venue:
Madison Square Garden
September 14, 2007

Interpol’s homecoming show at the Garden got off to a bit of a technical glitch. The band had to stop midway into their second song in order for the curtain to be removed. Once done, the band stoically played one song after another. Images of eyes and elephants careened their way behind the band while the hometown crowd faithfully cheered on. Nothing spectacular or memorable in their performance. You could have put four mannequins on stage and played the CD’s and nobody would have known the difference.

Many showed up early to watch the other New York band, The Liars, try in vain to fill such a large room with their distorted sound. Cat Power, backed by the Dirty Delta Blues, treated the audience to various covers, including an interesting take on the Rolling Stones’ “I Can’t Get No (Satisfaction)”. It was obvious that she was there to draw more people into justifying Interpol playing the Garden.

Needless to say, that all of these performers would have been better served playing a venue such as Hammerstein or Radio City. For that matter, the Garden has it’s own theatre that was much more suitable, but then again it was already being used.
