Okay, let's cliché this review and use the band names to describe their performances. Opening band Billy Talent, neither has a band member named Billy, nor do they have any talent. They are basically a group of guys who are getting back at their ex-girlfriends by writing terrible songs. They've got a singer who just screams, making it difficult for me to get the set list, so if it's inaccurate, blame him.
Next up is a band called Story of the Year who may actually be just that. With choreographed backflips between members and guitar spinning antics, it's obvious that they've spent as much time rehearsing their moves as they have their music. It will become interesting to see how much energy they will be able to expend when they graduate to doing two-hour shows in bigger venues, as their fan base will certainly grow.
Jet has flown all the way from Australia just to give us a history lesson. With an infusion of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, they're better at being Oasis than Oasis, especially since they've left their attitudes at the airport. While the other bands began their sets with the volume cranked up, Jet started with a ballad and slowly worked up from there, closing with version of "That's Alright, Mama" that would make the king himself proud. Jet is a band who knows about the roll part of rock n roll with beats, harmonies and melodies. It would seem that the future of rock n roll lies in the past.
