Kid Rockās has traded rap for southern boogie. While it is a step in the right direction, the crowds are just not coming. Jones Beach was barely halfway filled for the show and less than a quarter showed up for openers Puddle of Mudd. How sad is it when someone from the crowd yells to "play your old shit!" and your debut album came out in 2001. What is even sadder, is that the person didn't realize that only two new songs were played and the album came out in 2003.
Puddle of Mudd's lackluster set consisted of the band playing the songs the way you would hear them on the CD. No depth, no emotion, and definitely no punch in their performance. If you weren't paying attention, you might have been thinking, why do they keep playing this Puddle of Mudd pre show music?
Of course, the pre show music for Kid Rock was a preview of what was to come. Everything from Alabama to AC/DC, Journey to Def Leppard played and when Kid Rock stepped on stage everything from Alabama to ZZ Top was played. Too many tags and too many covers made this show seem more like a rock n roll revue rather than some rock star trying to promote his new album.
