Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav likes to play around. Whether he’s in the audience chanting “we’re going to have a concert,” or putting on several masks or thanking each individual member of the audience, he doesn’t take his status as a front man too seriously. Luckily, everyone else in the band picks up the slack so that instead of being perceived as a joke band, they are seen as a good modern rock band.
Another good modern rock band is the Detachment Kit. Their raw sound coupled with their arena level performance is sure to see them open for some big acts before they hit big on their own. Anthems like “Skyscrapers,” will certainly be overplayed on FM stations across the country.
The only downside to this show was the opening band, Smoke & Smoke. I don’t know when Richard Dreyfuss decided to front a band, but they are nothing more than somebody sprouting awful poetry over noise. There is neither rhythm nor melody in their sound. Hell, they don’t even have a guitar.
Nonetheless, Les Savy Fav and the Detachment Kit will certainly make Frenchkiss records very proud and very profitable. Harrington can make his own rules about having fun while still proving that the music will speak for itself.
