Metallica's tour is an attempt to appease the fans that were madly in anger with them. Set up as bad guys with the Napster debate has alienated some fans. Moving away from the style that made them an underground sensation has alienated some fans. Bringing bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park may have possibly alienated some fans as well.
This time around, they are hitting arenas with a round stage set up so that there are more up front spots. They are mixing up the set list to keep the show fresh. They even brought Godsmack along, a band that has a heavier sound and no DJ.
Metallica has generously allowed Godsmack to make full use of the round stage and even enjoy a few pyrotechnics throughout their 45-minute set plus a battle of drums between drummer Tommy Stewart and vocalist Sully Erna. The contest ended without a clear-cut winner.
Of course, had Lars Ulrich joined the fray, the outcome would certainly have been decided. Ulrich and his bandmates ripped into "Blackened" utilizing every inch of the round stage that wasn't on fire. Gems like "Ride the Lightning",and "Leper Messaih" were played instead of the usual "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Seek and Destroy".
The commeradarie between bandmembers, including new bassist Robert Trujillo, was that of old friends and not like the bitter enemies that they have been behaving like during the recording of St. Anger. It is this friendliness that allows them to be freer, releasing their anger if you will. It's possible that is why there weren't many mosh pits (if any). More importantly, it allows the new Metallica, to play like the old Metallica.
