JJ Grey & Mofro have become too big for the front porch.

Everything is bigger with the band's latest release "Country Ghetto." The songs are bigger, the production is bigger, and they now have a horn section so literally, the band is bigger. In fact their name is even bigger. Grey steps on the stage with his harmonica and starts the show with two numbers from their previous release "Lochloosa." From there, we embark on a journey of the "Country Ghetto," with all of its beauty and unattractiveness, Grey offers no apologies on how he feels about how his beloved South is dying. The problem may be too big, and he must be bigger in order to challenge it.

Of course he doesn't carry the burden alone; Hance's slide guitar work still captivates him to the spotlight despite sitting in the shadows. Tennessee native George Sluppick's precision drumming provides the beat, and New York's own Adam Scone hauntingly delivers the mood through his Hammond B3 Organ. The newest addition, the Hercules Horn Section adds in the missing pieces of the puzzle with the result being a band ready for bigger things. When you add in a guest appearance by Sharon Jones, the stakes get even higher.

Washington D.C. band Virginia Coalition opened the show with a festive performance that included several conga and cowbell jams. They're touring in support of their latest CD "Live at the 9:30 Club".
