sold out!
It was a hot and steamy night at the Beacon Theatre. It was cramped, crowded and what little air existed was slowly being extinguished by cigarette smoke. In reality, that is the perfect setting for a rock n roll show, and playing would be the self-professed "best band in the world." Before they would take the stage, the opening act had to warm up the already hot crowd. It is the rarity that an opening act blows the headliner away and tonight it wouldn't happen.

The Soundtrack to Our Lives played a 45-minute set that had my mind wandering about. When I realized the band was still playing, I thought to myself, "are they still there?" I was neither inspired nor even entertained by their lackluster set in which either the vocals were muddied or his accent was incoherent. But it wasn't them I came to see, and after a 15-minute wait, Oasis came not with a bang, but with a stride. Liam Gallagher comes out with his sunglasses and a towel wrapped around his neck and a tambourine in his hands, milking the rock idol for all it's worth. Their set didn't have the punch that a rock n roll show should have, especially in a cramped, sweaty place. Their boasts of being "the best band in the world," were proving to be nothing more than that. The only thing that saved them is the fact that they have such a large catalog of great catchy songs.

During Noel Gallagher's surprise acoustic version of Wonderwall," 3,000 plus fans sang along to every word and drowned him out. From what I could hear Noel Gallagher sing, the crowd was better. Oasis is certainly not the Beatles of today, nor will they ever be. As far as the boast of being the best band in the world, well you know my answer, but if you were to ask the other 3,000 people at the Beacon, I'll bet they'll all give you a different one.
