Iommi, Butler and Ward were able to show the crowd that they had aged gracefully; however, Ozzy Osbourne clearly has not. He struggled through most of the set as his voice is quickly fading. Ten Years of touring is not doing Ozzy any favors and a long vacation is what he needs. This time, he shouldn’t have any cameras in the house.
The torch should be passed to Iron Maiden. Maiden was clearly a band who not only had more energy than all the other (younger) bands on the bill combined, but obviously have the musical chops to back up their extravagant stage shows. Dickenson jumped from one end of the stage to the other while hitting every high note he needed to hit. Only songs from the bands first four albums made the cut as did a visit by Eddie, the band’s mascot. The only downside to Maiden’s set was that it only lasted an hour. If there is a lesson that Iron Maiden could give to the younger bands, it’s that they need to learn that a concert is also a show.
The only other showman on the bill was Rob Zombie who decided to have the stripped down version of his show play on the second stage. His was perhaps the only band on the second stage in which the vocals were not made of grunts and growls. Without the tapestries depicting the band names, one wouldn’t be able to tell one band from another. Even Arch Enemy’s Angela Gossow sounds like a man when she growls.
The only promising band on the second stage was Mastodon. I could definitely see them on the mainstage on future Ozzfests. Their solid musicianship will certainly guarantee the band a career for years to come. Perhaps they can last as long as Sabbath, if the vocals are able to stay intact.
