It was the longest jam that I have seen any band perform live. A 30-minute non-stop back and forth flow that constantly teased that an end was near. It’s enough to make even never-say-die fans cause a near riot when a headliner attempts such a stunt, but this was done by the opening act. The Mars Volta, quite obviously tired of the time restraints, stage restrictions and the pressure of selling themselves, decided to just play. And if you didn’t like it, that was your tough luck.
Jamming would be the theme for the evening when the Chili Peppers took the stage. The band would do several instrumentals at varying times during the show, whether one jam was planned when drummer Chad Smith needed to replace his snare may never be known.
In between jams, the Chili Peppers delivered a generous portion of songs off their latest double CD “Stadium Arcadium,” and generally stayed current tending to stick to songs from more recent releases. One exception was an adrenaline pumping performance of “Nobody Weird Like Me” which may have been played in order to shake off all the white confetti that blanketed the entire arena during “Snow (Hey Oh)”. The effect produced the desired result and was clearly the visual highlight of the night. I’d hate to be one of the cleaning crew having to clean that mess. Maybe playing some jams while the crew cleans up will ease the burden.
