Sold out!
The Roseland Ballroom generally holds 3000 to 3500 people. I've been to sold out shows at the Roseland before but they must have sold an additional 2000 tickets because the place was wall-to-wall people. No matter where I stood, I was being crushed. This place certainly wasn't for the claustrophobic. During Jonny Lang's set, the crowd kept growing and growing and growing and going (for beer that is).

Lang's 45-minute set got the crowd ready for some blues infested rock which didn't die down even after waiting an additional hour for Mick and the boys to hit the stage. By this time, I was standing by the soundboard with a little space to breathe and standing on my toes to see the stage. My legs were hurting, I was tired of waiting and was feeling completely miserable. But when the opening chords of "Start Me Up," were played, something magical occurred. The pain in my legs were gone. A endless sea of energy hit me. It might have come from Jagger who strutted and swaggered across the stage. It might have come from Richards, who just casually strummed the guitar making it all look so easy. It may have even come from Watts whose bored demeanor may just be a mask hiding some power source. Most likely it was a combination of all of the above and more.

Proving once again that they are truly the greatest rock n roll band in the world, they completed the New York trilogy (first gig was at Madison Square Garden and the second at Giants Stadium) with a '"we'll play what we feel like" set that included the never before played "She Smiled Sweetly." Jonny Lang came out one more time for a rendition of "Rock Me Baby." It was something that you could see coming. Seeing the Stones in a small venue playing a rarities set is a rock fan's wet dream, and for me, it's now a wet reality.
