Neither Rooney nor the opening act, The Redwalls, has spent any time in the 60's
(they probably haven't spent any time in the 70's either). Like the new crop
of bands like Kings of Leon, Jet and most notably, The Strokes, Rooney is
showing that in order to move forward with music, they are retreating to the
past.
The Sunglass Hut sponsored free show at Irving Plaza didn't draw as many fans as a free show normally would, and so many in attendance weren't fans as much as they were employees of the corporate sponsor. It was more like a private party in which the crowd was more concerned with mingling and downing the free drinks at the bar rather than listen to the band.
Of course that didn't stop Rooney from giving us a sampling of some new songs. "One Armed Man," "Paralyzed" and "Enough is Enough" which are definitely enough to get me to buy their new album when it is released. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out that the Beatles heavily influenced opening act, The Redwalls. Granted, everybody is influenced by the Beatles, but The Redwalls takes it a step further from having mop tops to playing a Hofner bass. It's not so much a gimmick as it is homage. The Redwalls showed that you can be true to your heroes and still spark creativity
in songwriting (kind of what the Beatles did...hmmmm!).
