Rush is one of the few bands who are able to change with the times without compromising themselves. They give new meaning to the term “power trio” as each has skillfully mastered their instruments. That was apparent when they did their beginning medley of early songs and it didn’t stop there. With 30 years of material, Rush provided no shortage of great songs from their catalogue.
The only minus was that the intermission took away the momentum built up in the first half. Those 20 minutes could have been better spent playing full versions of "Finding My Way", "Anthem", and "Bastille Day" plus they could have thrown in their noticeably absent anthems "Closer to the Heart" and "Fly by Night". They certainly would have been better received than the several covers scattered through their set.
Peart’s drum solo is a show unto itself. He has certainly influenced every new drummer who sits behind a kit. He is the reason Rush is still around and he has made the cowbells the coolest part of the drums. Lifeson can be forgiven for his incoherent rant as he is certainly no slouch with the guitar. As each Rush song is unique, he has a rack of guitars waiting in the wings including the double neck which he uses for the majestic epic tune "Xanadu". Geddy Lee certainly complements his bandmates with his strong bass lines and keyboard arrangements.
The screens behind the band depicted everything from their new mascot, a dragon with a penchant for cigars and TV, to pictures of the band during various times of their career, like when Lifeson and Peart had hair and Lee had a mullet. The intro and outro of Jerry Stiller showed the sense of humor the band has, despite the seriousness they take their music. It’s no wonder that Rush is probably one of the few rock bands right now who not only are still around after 30 years, they’re still selling out wherever they go.
